Deadline: Sunday 23 June
Who can submit?
Intersex people aged 30 or below from anywhere in the world. Partners, parents and family of intersex people may also be considered.
If you are younger than 18 years old, we will get in touch with you to talk further about publication risks.
Anonymous submissions or works to be published under a pseudonym are welcomed.
What can I submit?
We are accepting any kind of writing and artwork – anything that can be published in print! We have previously published essays, poetry, photography, drawings and comic strips. Look through our previous issues to see what we publish.
The theme for this issue is “Grow”. We want to hear about the experiences in your life that have changed you. This could be the obstacles you have overcome, the relationships you’ve made, the moments you’ve had that you have learned from and helped you become stronger or changed you in some way. We also want to hear about where you want to be. What are your hopes for the future, for yourself and for others?
You can use this prompt as much or as little in your submission as you like. You do not need to submit something related to this theme, but you can use it to help guide you in developing a submission.
Submissions must be your own original work, unpublished and not under consideration elsewhere.
Written work can be up to two pages. Get in touch if you would like to submit something longer and we can discuss.
What language can I submit in?
You may submit in any language. YOUth&I is an English-based publication. If you submit works in a language other than English, we will do what we can to translate your piece and publish your original piece alongside a translated version.
Depending on the language you submit in, we may need some guidance from you and/or a regional intersex organisation as to who may assist in the translation work. Please get in touch if there is someone you know who is able to translate your work to English, including yourself.
Copyright
Copyright will remain with the contributor although YOUth&I retains online and print publication rights in perpetuity. We ask that you acknowledge YOUth&I in any subsequent publication.
How much will I be paid?
You will be paid AUD$100 for each published piece.
Can I submit multiple pieces?
Yes, you can send in as many pieces as you like, however depending on the number of contributions we receive we may not publish them all. You will be paid for each published contribution.
When do I need to submit by?
We are accepting submissions until Sunday 23 June. We may be able to accept submissions after this time on a case-by-case basis, but please contact us early to let us know if there are expected delays.
We encourage early submissions to give us time to work with you to edit your work. If your work needs to be translated, please try and submit your work early or let us know what language you are planning to submit in.
Please get in touch with us early on if you are interested in submitting but are having trouble with the timeframe or other issues, and we can see what we can do to accommodate you.
